THE ISLANDS

by Dionne Irving

Well written, wonderfully creative stories focusing on the experience of being a Jamaican immigrant. Not much more to say, except I enjoyed reading them, and thought a lot about what it means to be an immigrant. The book also delivers some heavy-handed comments about colonialism, racism, and slavery. While I understand and sympathise with anyone expressing their sense of injustice, I would love to see the day when the wider discourse moves to a place were we recognise the commonality between all people who are poor, suppressed, dislocated, discriminated against and longing for a place to call home.
